On Saturday, December 4th a group of volunteers served about 40 to 45 of DC’s homeless population in front of Union Station in NE Washington DC.

          FACTS

           

          As of January 2020, District of Columbia had an estimated 6,380 people experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of that Total, 767 were family households, 302 were Veterans, 253 were unaccompanied young adults (aged 18-24), and 1,452 were individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.


          Public school data reported to the U.S. Department of Education during the 2018-2019 school year shows that an estimated 6,858 public school students experienced homelessness over the course of the year. Of that total, 108 students were unsheltered, 1,427 were in shelters, 318 were in hotels/motels, and 4,746 were doubled up.



          As of January 2020, Maryland had an estimated 6,360 experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of that Total, 616 were family households, 464 were Veterans, 227 were unaccompanied young adults (aged 18-24), and 1,397 were individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.


          Public school data reported to the U.S. Department of Education during the 2018-2019 school year shows that an estimated 16,202 public school students experienced homelessness over the course of the year. Of that total, 165 students were unsheltered, 2,062 were in shelters, 1,438 were in hotels/motels, and 12,537 were doubled up.



          As of January 2020, Virginia had an estimated 5,957 experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of that Total, 621 were family households, 395 were Veterans, 234 were unaccompanied young adults (aged 18-24), and 813 were individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.


          Public school data reported to the U.S. Department of Education during the 2018-2019 school year shows that an estimated 20,443 public school students experienced homelessness over the course of the year. Of that total, 185 students were unsheltered, 1,937 were in shelters, 3,262 were in hotels/motels, and 15,059 were doubled up.
